A Ductless Mini Split In A Brevard, NC Master Bedroom

Finding a Comfortable Night’s Sleep in Brevard

The homeowners of this great home in the woods in Brevard were adding on an office and expanded master bedroom suite on the second floor. As part of the renovation, they knew they needed a new heating and cooling solution that would keep this area of the home comfortable. They gave us a call here at Blue Ridge Heating & Air to see what we could suggest.

Luckily, this is something we see a lot of. One particular space needs to be treated because the ductwork doesn’t extend to that spot, or the renovation needs a little added heating and cooling.

Problem: The owners of this cottage-style home in Brevard were adding an office and master bedroom on their second floor. They needed to have a heating and cooling solution that would keep the homeowners comfortable while not affecting the comfort of the rest of the home.

Solution: A single unit of Mitsubishi ductless heating and air conditioning will give these homeowners the quiet comfort they need to make every night a peaceful one.

Renovations and Additions Need HVAC Solutions

When an HVAC system is installed, if it’s done properly, the system is sized for the home, taking into account not only the climate but the number of rooms, the airflow, and more. That’s why HVAC technicians are so well trained- they have to understand a lot of engineering to make sure a home has a properly sized system, with proper air distribution, in order to keep people comfortable.

When you add to your home or finish off a space like a basement, your current HVAC system may not be designed to heat and cool that extra space. You basically have two options- upgrade your entire system, or look for supplemental systems for the new area. That’s what our homeowners here were faced with.

Supplemental HVAC Systems-Ductless Is a Great Option

There are a lot of options when you are considering how to heat and cool an addition- you could try to use space heaters, electric baseboards, window air conditioners, and the like- but if you are investing in an upgrade to your home, getting a more permanent- and energy-efficient system is a better choice.

When our specialists from Blue Ridge Heating & Air went to the home, we knew that a single zone of Mitsubishi ductless heating and cooling would be perfect to provide year-round comfort for this new space, and give the owners the comfort they needed, while keeping energy bills low.

Why Mitsubishi Ductless?

Mitsubishi ductless systems are high-efficiency heat pumps, with outstanding SEER ratings. The homeowners wanted something that wasn’t going to run their energy bills up. They also wanted something that could both heat and cool, so they didn’t need a seperate system depending on the time of year. Finally, these systems are whisper quiet, unlike other air conditioning solutions.

They decided to go with a single-zone ductless mini split installation. It would be able to check all the boxes of what they are looking for, and didn’t impact their current HVAC system at all.

How Ductless Mini Splits Work

These systems are made up of two parts- an outdoor condenser unit, and an indoor air distribution unit, often called a cassette or head.

The heat pump can use the ambient outdoor air to add or remove heat from the refrigerant-filled lines that connect to the indoor unit, distributing heated or cooled air evenly throughout the room. The cassette has advanced sensors that help monitor the room for temperature and humidity, and will add just the amount of heating or cooling you need to maintain a consistent level of comfort in your home.

Mitsubishi Ductless systems are operated by a handheld remote, or you can opt for a thermostat, or you can use the Kumo Cloud app on your smartphone, to adjust the comfort level from anywhere!

Energy Efficiency With Separate Zones

By creating a new zone just for the Master Bedroom and office, the homeowners can get the comfort they need, when they need it, without adjusting the comfort level throughout the rest of the home.

For example, when the owners are out, or spending time entertaining downstairs, they can have the master bedroom and office on standby mode or shut them off completely. Then, just before bedtime, they can turn on the system through the Kumo Cloud app, and go to sleep in perfect comfort. And if they are spending all day in the home office, they can keep comfortable without worrying about the temperature in the rest of the home.

These separate areas of heating and cooling let you adjust your comfort as needed- but really, it’s all about the energy savings. Mitsubishi Ductless systems are up to 70% more efficient in heating and up to 30% more efficient in cooling than standard systems, meaning you’ll get more comfort while spending considerably less on energy bills each and every month!

How Mini Splits Fit In This Brevard Home

For this home, the new Master Bedroom and Home Office space had a high ceiling, allowing us to place the indoor unit high up on the wall, out of the way. The unit can then monitor the temperature and humidity levels easily, and distribute the perfect amount of air throughout the space, meaning no more hot or cool spots you get with other systems.

Quiet Comfort

For a space like the Master Bedroom and Home office, comfort and noise are both important. Mitsubishi ductless systems at really quiet- 19db- as quiet as a whisper. That means when the heating or cooling kicks on, all you’ll notice is the comfort- it won’t disturb your important business call or your sleep!

Saving Money While Getting More

Mitsubishi ductless systems are so energy efficient, they qualify for rebates and the new tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act. There are tax credits available up to $2,000 on the installation of high-efficiency heat pump systems like this one, making them even more affordable for homeowners. While a ductless system does cost more to install than a space heater or regular air conditioner, the performance and long-term energy savings keep your bills under control while giving you superior comfort, whether it’s -13F outside or over 100F.
